Migrant women, work, and investment in language learning : Two success stories

2019

Abstract In the media, migrant mothers are often portrayed as uneducated, having trouble learning a new language, and preferring to stay at home rather than entering paid employment. This article offers a contrasting point of view as a result of examining how two migrant women narrativize their experiences of language learning and working-life-related integration during a three-year period. Specific attention is paid to how the women make sense of their language use over time, and how this may have contributed to their integration into working life and the wellbeing of their families. Interview data was analyzed using the short story analytical approach, focusing on both the content and the…

The Advent of duanpian xiaoshuo: A Combination of Western Discourse and Chinese Legacy in the Early Definitions of the Modern Short Story

2020

During the late Qing, a thriving transcultural interaction across China and the West determined a burgeoning cultural environment in which new forms of appreciation and critique contributed to the development of a new sense of literary modernity and new ways of conceiving and classifying literature (wen) distant from the “canon”. Shenbao was also one of the first papers which recognized the attractive power of literature and of the so called duanpian xiaoshuo 短篇小說 (Chen 2009, p. 117). In those years, Shenbao introduced new contents and form of reception that were already …

'Climbing Untrodden Paths and Unfrequented Passes'. De-Generation in 'The Buddhist Priest's Wife' by Schreiner, 'A Cross Line' by Egerton and 'The Un…

2013

This essay aims to show how different forms of de-generation in the social construction of fin de siècle female identity prove to be intentional instruments to defy conventional 19th century femininity and generate and circulate new female discoursivities in order to integrate forms of transgression into socially accepted behaviours. The analysis of Schreiner’s “The Buddhist Priest’s Wife” (1891), Egerton’s “A Cross Line” (1893), and Grand’s “The Undefinable: A Fantasia” (1894), will highlight the…
